When visiting Taos, New Mexico the traveler is now assured of being able to find nutritious food. Whether Vegetarian, vegan, locally grown, organic--it is all available.

Taos, New Mexico is well known for its green landscape, but now its restaurants are following the national (and international) trend of organic, natural, local-grown (and sometimes) vegetarian food.

Joseph's Table Restaurant

“The world is our country, cooking good food our religion, organic and wild our mission” is Chef Joseph Wrede’s motto.

Chef Joseph tries to keep his restaurant, Joseph’s Table (and the other three kitchens he oversees), as natural as possible.

“Some years ago I decided that to improve the quality of food in my restaurant I would buy from local farmers, where there's rarely a middleman and specifications are more likely to be met... My latest solution has been to grow my own herbs, vegetables, and fruits. I'm in the fortunate position to be partners with a ranching family that has plenty of space for growing fruits and vegetables. At the very least I can stop paying for the marketing expenses and delivery fees of those large food companies. And the best part is that I can gain some control over the quality of my ingredients while taking responsibility for the growing and harvesting of the food I serve.” expounds Chef Joseph.

Other Taos, New Mexico Restaurants of Note

Chef Damon Simonton of Chef Damon’s restaurant keeps his menu “Fresh-Local-Organic.”

The Outback Pizza prepares its pizzas on Organic hand tossed crust.

Doc Martin's Restaurant, located in the famous, historic Taos Inn, specializes in organic foods and local fish and meats.

El Gamal is a food truck, located on a shaded courtyard with exquisite views, that serves ovo, lacto, vegan-friendly, Middle Eastern fast take-out food.

The Love Apple is a sweet little restaurant that serves everything organic and locally grown.

Chef Antonio Matus and his wife Sarah have gone organic with their Rellenos Café including wheat and gluten free foods, and are trying to green up their new Antonio’s Restaurant.

Organic Foods

“Dining out, eating organic a new trend in restaurants: can you dine out on the same fresh and healthy organic foods you like to cook with? Absolutely. In a few cases, the menu even comes certified - restaurant row.” according to Natural Health Magazine.

The just-food.website claims that, “In the last ten years, demand for organic foods has doubled, and is expected to more than double again in the next few years…”

Sustainable Restaurants Set a New Culinary Trend

So, it seems that Taos is not alone in this trend. The Wall Street Journal’s headlines proclaim, “Green Cuisine: London's Sustainable Restaurants Set a New Culinary Trend.”
